59.00.B1 Toner Collection Duct Unit (TCDU) motor error or TCDU Noise during operation.

Issue:

Some E877 series printers show 59.00.B1 error or have TCDU Noise after out-of-box (OOB) event.

Cause

TCDUs, which have high torque gear, have not been inspected correctly on the production line recently.

These gears cause TCDU motor error when rotating the TCDU gear.

As a fundamental measure, the contact point of TCDU’s gear has been improved for a smoother gear rotation.

Affected printers

HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E87740dn, E87750dn, E87760dn, E87770dn, E87740z, E87750z, E87760z, E87770z

Solution

HP recommends the following solution.

  1. Reseat the Toner collection duct unit (TCDU).

    NOTE:

When installing TCDU correctly, push the left tab (callout 1) first until it clicks. And then push the right tab (call out2) until it clicks.

If there is damage to the gear, it could be because TCDU is not installed correctly.

    Install TCDU
  2. If the issue persists, remove the TCDU and then rotate the TCDU gear about 10 times by hand.

  3. If there is still an issue, order new TCDU that was produced after Oct. 2023.

    NOTE:

To ensure smoother rotation of the TCDU’s gear, the design has been improved.

    TCDU design change
    • a - The Structure of the Auger’s connection has been changed.

    • b - There has been a design change to decrease noise caused by friction.

    NOTE:

If there is no issue, you do not need to replace TCDU.

Part number is JC96-13015A like before.

Check bottom of the TCDU for the serial number.

The 6th and 7th digits from the end are manufacture year and month. - WB: Oct. 2023, WC: Nov. 2023, WD: Dec. 2023, X1-XD: Jan.-Dec. 2024

  1. Use the Service Tools menu diagnostic test to check the TCDU motor operation.
 NOTE:
Before performing the diagnostic test below, please prepare to make a video.
    1. Open the following menus and perform the TCDU motor diagnostic test:
      • Support Tools
      • Advanced Service
      • Advanced Diagnostic
      • Component Tests
      • TCU
      • 104-0200 Toner Collection Duct Unit Motor
    2. During the test, make a video to capture any motor and gear sounds.
    3. Open the front door, remove the TCDU. Close the door and perform the TCDU motor diagnostic test a second time.

    4. During the second test, make a video to capture any motor and gear sounds.
    5. Check the drive gear (G1). The gear should slightly move up and down.
Use the links below to view a short video of normal gear movement or of a locked gear (no movement).
 IMPORTANT:
If the gear appears to be locked, please create a video for further investigation.
  • Rotate the TCDU gear by hand as shown below.
 NOTE:
If the gear does not easily rotate, retain the TCDU for further investigation.

  1. If the test results indicate that there is a problem with the motor operation, elevate the case using the Standard Support Process and include the information below.
    1. When did the error occur?
      • When the printer was installed for the first time/while using the printer?
      • If the error occurred promptly after the printer was installed (out-of-box (OOB) event), is there any damage to the outside of the shipping box? If yes, please capture images of the damaged box.
    2. Does the motor emit normal operating sounds during the diagnostic?
    3. Include the video of the gear operation created in step 1-e.
    4. Collect the JDP log files.
    5. If possible, include the Duct Drive Unit (JC93-01669A) and the Duct Unit (JC96-13015A).
  2. If the issue persists after replacing or reseating the TCDU, do the following.
    1. Remove six screws, and then remove the inner cover.
