Capture advanced diagnostic logs
To capture diagnostic logs, enable the Additional Diagnostic Data feature to initiate the data collection process, and then disable the feature.
Note:
Depending upon the error state, you may not be able to use the new feature. See the section Troubleshooting the Advanced Diagnostic Log feature.
- Connect a USB thumb drive to the front port on the printer.Note:It is recommended to create a new folder on the USB thumb drive for each new issue, and then select that folder when capturing logs for different issues.
- Enable the Additional Diagnostic Data feature from the control panel.
- On the control panel, open the Support Tools > Troubleshooting menus.
- Select the Additional Diagnostic Data option.A message displays that device performance and memory usage will be affected.
- Under Destination in the right pane, select Choose.
- Select the folder where you want to save the logs, and then click Select. The folder location is populated in the Destination field.
- Select Enable to initiate the data collection process.Note:Logs such as SysTrace.bin will continuously load into the USB thumb drive after the feature is enabled. Typically, each file is created at an interval of 2-3 minutes. It will remain enabled even after a power cycle of the printer to help capture more detailed information for boot up error scenarios. An Event code is added to the Event Log that the feature has been enabled. A message is also added to the Message Center that Additional Diagnostic Data capturing is running and will affect device performance.
- Perform a test to try to reproduce the issue.Note:If the printer is rebooted or shut down, the Additional Diagnostic Data feature starts running in the background as the system boots up, and when the printer arrives at a
Ready
state, then a message is added to the Message Center that the feature is running and will affect device performance. - After you successfully reproduce the issue, then collect the traditional logs using the Retrieve Diagnostic Data feature.Note:Do not remove the USB thumb drive until after the older diagnostic logs have been collected.
- On the control panel, open the Support Tools > Troubleshooting menus.
- Select the Retrieve Diagnostic Data option.
- After all logs have been collected, then disable the Additional Diagnostic Data feature.Note:Keeping this feature enabled will reduce the performance of the device.
- On the control panel, open the Support Tools > Troubleshooting menus.
- Select the Additional Diagnostic Data option.
- Select Disable. The diagnostic logs for the analysis and fixing of critical defects are saved to the USB thumb drive. Also, an Event code is added to the Event log or Info log that the feature has been disabled, and the message in the Message Center is removed.
- Disconnect the USB thumb drive from the printer.
- Share the advanced diagnostic logs.
- Connect the USB thumb drive to a computer.
- On the USB thumb drive, navigate to the folder where you saved the files.
- Copy the folder from the USB thumb drive to the computer.Note:Multiple .JDP files starting with TraceLogCapture00001.jdp will be listed. Each file is approximately 8.5 MB in size.
- To share the logs, first use any software to archive/compress the contents to reduce the size, and then save as <filename>.zip (for example).
- Share the logs with HP Support and/or developers.
